The one trait that determines success in this $300B industry

I just wrapped a deep dive webinar on the restoration industry, and I want to cut straight to the most important part.

Restoration franchises can have massive ROI. But there’s a crucial question you have to answer first:

Are you comfortable building a business that runs on urgency?

Not "do you like working hard" or "are you willing to hustle."

I mean: are you comfortable with the fact that your business fundamentally operates on other people's emergencies?

Let me break down what that actually means.

What urgency looks like in practice

When someone calls a restoration company, it's because their basement is flooding. Or their house caught fire. Or there's mold spreading through their walls.

They're not shopping around. Their decision window is microscopic. They need help right now.

That urgency is why restoration has some of the highest ROI in franchising. You're providing an essential service at a moment when people have zero discretion about whether they need it.

But here's the flip side:

If you get a call at 9 PM on a Sunday that someone has six feet of water in their basement, you can't tell them to call back tomorrow.

You might not be the one physically responding to that call. As you scale, you'll build a team. But the reality is: somebody has to go. And when you're the owner, the buck stops with you.

Even if you have a manager in place, even if you have systems, there's always a chance you get a call at a less-than-ideal time. 

You need to be okay knowing your team is dealing with someone's crisis.

Some people can handle that level of trust. Others aren't.

Neither answer is wrong. But you have to know which one you are.

How urgency shapes your business

Here's the thing about urgency: it doesn't just add stress. It amplifies every operational challenge you'd face in any service business.

  • Labor shortages: if you don’t have the staff right now, you’re losing business. 

  • Cash flow issues: Same here. You can't afford to wait around for problems to resolve themselves.

  • Customer expectations: Your customers are probably having one of the worst days of their life. That frustration might land on you.

Being great at small business operations means you can turn crises into inconveniences. When urgency is baked into the model, that becomes a lot harder to pull off.

But if you can pull it off? That's where the financial upside comes from.

It comes down to you

Most people can't handle urgency well. That's just reality. 

If you can, you have a massive competitive edge in the restoration space. And the payoff can be huge, for the right operator. 

So if you thrive under pressure, enjoy problem-solving, and don’t mind a business that runs on an unpredictable schedule. 

If that sounds exhausting, restoration probably isn't for you.
