Don’t buy a franchise if you care too much
My counterintuitive advice for anyone getting into franchising.
Hey folks,
Today I have a piece of advice that I’ve seen a ton of people get totally backwards:
The best franchise for you is one you’re not passionate about.
Let me explain.
Quick note: Michael Girdley and I are hosting a free online Q&A next Thursday — bring your toughest franchising questions, and we’ll tackle them live!

Weird thing about me: I really love cleaning pools.
It’s one of the most satisfying things in the world.
Which is exactly why I’ll never buy a pool cleaning franchise.
I have owned and operated franchises in the window cleaning and trash compaction industries.
I have zero passion for either, nor do I enjoy personally delivering either service.
My passion, rather, is about business: building teams, driving revenue, and seeing the value created as it all comes together.
If you’re really passionate about the specific product or service you’re offering, two things can happen.
You want to get into the weeds… but can’t
When you care a ton about your product, you want it to be the absolute best it can be. So you’re in there tweaking, making it special, and finding every opportunity to maximize its potential.
This is a healthy mindset if you’re inventing a concept from the ground up, but it’s a disastrous mindset to carry into a franchise.
The whole point of franchising is: you’re bolting your horse to a business model that’s already proven. Your job is to execute with excellence.
If you’re itching to extensively innovate the product or service a franchise offers, you aren’t confident enough in the concept to own it.
The question for you to answer is: can I embrace this system to execute it wholeheartedly… or should I not buy this franchise?
You end up working IN the business, not ON it
This is exactly why I will never buy a pool cleaning business.
If the “worst-case scenario” is my cleaning pools all day, I’m not going to be motivated to systems and hold my team to a high standard.
Instead, I bought a franchise that cleans windows. I’m not sure if you’ve ever properly cleaned a window, but I find it to be agonizing.
My dread of cleaning windows was a constant reminder to work ON the business enough that I would never have to touch a squeegee.
Over time, this mindset adds up to build a healthy, durable business where someone else does most of the tactical work.

Don’t get me wrong: passion is great. The world has been changed by people who are product-oriented and obsessed with innovation, many of whom have made more money than I ever will.
But if your passion is business, and you can treat any product or service as a means of pursuing that passion — lean into that.
That’s me. And that’s why franchising has been a great fit.
If that’s you too, we should talk!
